 19   Cátedra Latinoamericana “Julio Cortázar” In 1993, writers Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel García Márquez presented an initiative to found a “cátedra” to the University of Guadalajara that paid permanent trib- ute to the memory of their friend, the Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar. Cátedra Latinoamericana “Julio Cortázar” was born to become a space for criticism and reflection on Latin American society and culture on the global stage. Aca- demic activities began in 1994, in the city of Guadala- jara, Mexico. Over the years, the cátedra has extended its voca- tion from the field of social sciences to other areas of human knowledge, such as astrophysics, mathematics and biology. Additionally, since 2008, the cátedra has expanded its academic and cultural expansion activi- ties to the city of Los Angeles, California, in connection with the UDG Foundation US.
